What a day on the beach I have just had with not one, but two bits of gold from the sand. Beach metal detecting can be a very frustrating hobby and sometime you can go detecting only to find very littel, others times you can find a good selection of great items. Then, once in a while you hit the jackpot and I certainly did that the other day while metal detecting on my local beach.  (open the article and take a closer look at the gold)

I am always amazed as to what you can find on the beaches when metal detecting and many beach user really do not know what they are walking across. During the summer months the families happily dig on the beach and enjoy the sun, but there are some great, unusual and valuable items just beneath their feet.

A short but interesting post, as I came across this video clip and being a metal detectorist who spends a lot of time metal detecting on the beach, I could not help but highlight this great video clip. If metal detecting is your hobby and you have children it goes without saying that your children will probably want to walk in you foot steps and try metal detecting for themselves. This is not a bad thing and ir's a great hobby to be involved in from an early age.  With this in mind, what metal detector would you buy for them. As a metal detectorist you never know what may come out of the ground. In some areas where you have done your research you find little or nothing. On others areas where you expect to find very little and you are chancing your arm a little, you end up finding something interesting.

The coin below is one such find that was out of the blue but none the less welcome. It is a Dartmouth Farthing of about 1640. This was found on a small field near the coast in Devon in England while metal detecting with another detectorist. It was the first time that I had metal detected on this particular field and found little else of note.
